In The Beginning There Was Darkness
Genesis 1:1-2, John 1:1-2
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church from the book of Genesis:
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
And from the Gospel of John:
In the beginning
there was the Word;
the Word was in God’s presence,
and the Word was God. 2 The Word was present to God
from the beginning. 3 Through the Word
all things came into being,
and apart from the Word
nothing came into being
that has come into being. 4 In the Word was life,
and that life was humanity’s light— 5 a light that shines in the darkness,
a light that the darkness has never overtaken.
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God
